Kedah

Kedah (pop. 1,778,188) is a state of Malaysia, located in the northwestern part of Peninsular Malaysia. The state covers a total area of 9,425 km², and consists mostly of flat areas growing rice, plus the island of Langkawi. It was called Syburi by the Siamese when it was under their influence.

To the north are the state of Perlis and the international boundary with Songkhla and Yala Provinces of Thailand, to the south and southwest are Perak and Penang respectively.

The state's capital and royal seat is Alor Setar. Other major towns include Sungai Petani, and Kulim on the mainland, and Kuah on Pulau Langkawi.

...Naturally I was out early and keen to find out what was around: first birds on the list were Asian koel, black-headed bulbul, greater racket-tailed drongo, brahminy kite, baya weaver, spotted dove, Pacific (house) swallow, white-breasted kingfisher and black-nest swiftlet, all of which were commonly seen or heard during the week....

Off the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, near the border with Thailand, lies a group of over 100 stunning tropical islands the largest of which is Pulau Langkawi. Langkawi is clean, green and friendly. Tourist development, on the whole, appears to be as low impact as possible and the islands still possess uncrowded beaches, thickly forested hillsides and unpolluted mangroves where monkeys, otters, kingfishers and hornbills abound…
