Chris Mead - Funeral & Memorial Fund

The quiet, family funeral of Chris Mead took place today in Norfolk.

The quiet, family funeral of Chris Mead took place today [29th Jan 2003] in Norfolk. A memorial event is planned for early May, when birdwatchers from all over Britain will gather in Thetford, at the headquarters of the British Trust for Ornithology. A Chris Mead Memorial Fund was launched on Friday, which it is hoped will raise ?25,000.Funeral

A small group of family and friends gathered at King`s Lynn in Norfolk today (29 January) to say farewell to Chris Mead, who died suddenly on 16 January. Chris was one of the best-known faces and voices in ornithology for much of the 41 years spent working for the British Trust for Ornithology. For 33 years Chris worked for the Trust`s Ringing Scheme. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of birds, especially their migration, and appeared frequently on radio and television. Chris wrote six bird books and contributed to many more. He is survived by his wife Verity (always known as V) and three daughters.Memorial Day

Chris Mead`s family, together with his friends and colleagues from the BTO and the wider birdwatching world, will gather to celebrate Chris`s life at a memorial event in early May. This will take place at the headquarters of the British Trust for Ornithology in Thetford, Norfolk. In a joint statement from Harriet Mead and Graham Appleton (BTO), they said, This will be a time to remember Chris`s contribution to ornithology, to the BTO and to the lives of his friends and family.Memorial Fund

Launching the Chris Mead Memorial Fund on Friday (24 Jan) Harriet Mead (for the family) and Graham Appleton (BTO) outlined plans to celebrate his life.It seems fitting to make his memorial a permanent one, which is why we have decided to use contributions from those who will miss him to develop the BTO library, and rename it The Chris Mead Library. After all, now that birders and press contacts do not have Chris at the end of a telephone or e-mail, more of us are going to need the library! The BTO library, which is used by members, staff and visiting researchers, is currently housed in the Chapel of the old Nunnery. This is the part of BTO HQ, which was not completed in 1991, when money ran out. The library only has background heating, there is precious little space in which to work, insufficient shelf space and a wall at one end that is made of polythene and batons. With the help of the Chris Mead Memorial Fund we hope to deal with many of these problems and to provide better, modern library services too. This is a chance not just to mark the life of Chris Mead but also to build for the future. As we are all agreed, this is a fundraising opportunity, which Chris would not have let go by. He had a way of opening our wallets as well as our hearts! Let`s do him proud!Donations can be made on the BTO website, by phone (01842 750050) or by cheque made payable to BTO, sent to CMMF, BTO, The Nunnery, Thetford, Norfolk, IP24 2PU.
