The 3rd Koshi Tappu Migratory Bird Festival & World Wetlands Day 2003…

The 3rd Koshi Tappu Migratory Bird Festival 2003, which was scheduled to start from 18th to 25th January 2003, was re-scheduled from 2nd to 8th February 2003. The festival was postponed due to cold and foggy weather in the whole of the eastern part of Nepal. This year the festival coincided with the World Wetlands Day on 2nd February 2003. Both of the events were organised by Aqua Birds Unlimited Camp at Koshi Tappu Wild Life Reserve - Eastern Nepal, with support from Nepal Tourism Board, IUCN - Nepal, Department of National Parks and Wild life Conservation (DNPWC), Discover Nepal and Dream Nepal Travel & Tours (Pvt.) Ltd.Both of the festivals were concluded having had high domestic participation (around five thousand people). Badri Narayan Basnet, Minister of Forests and Soil Conservation inaugurated the 3rd Migratory Bird Festival and the World Wetlands Day 2003. High-ranking government officials, dignitaries, police and army units and Nepal Tourism Board were also present.Addressing the audience the minister highlighted the importance of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserveand emphasized the need to create an suitable environment both for the local community and private sector to develop Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserveinto a major tourist destination.Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, covering an area of 175 sq. km. has about 461 species of birds recorded of which more than 200 are migratory. Besides Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is also famous for Wild Water Buffaloes that roam freely across its tall grasses and flat plains. A special ethnic dance competition was organised by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) to mark the celebration of World Wetlands Day.Nepal Tourism Board had also invited a group of journalists and reporters from various daily and weekly papers and FM stations on a familiarisation trip to cover the event in a more effective way. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Paras Bir Bikram Shah (with his family) visitedKoshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve too.Activities included an Ethnic Dance Competition Show (with 5 ethnic groups participating), an Elephant Safari, a Jungle Drive, a Boat Ride on Koshi River, a Nature Walk and Bird Watching. There was an awareness Programme with local district government officials, which was organised by the Warden`s Office (DNPWC) and an Interaction Programme organised by Nepal tourism Board at Biratnagar City. Local People displayed their local products at the exhibition and a Bird Survey was conducted (this year 436 species were found on the reserve).In the course of the next year a number of programmes will be operating including the World Wildlife Day from 14th to 20th April - To be organised by Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation all over Nepal; World Environment Day on 5th June - To be organised by Department of Environment jointly with other Departments, INGO`s and NGO`s; Christmas Bird Count from 24th, 25th & 26th December - To be organised by Aqua Birds Unlimited Camp. Furthermore the 4th Migratory Bird Festival from 18th January to 25th January 2004 - To be organised by All the Hotels, INGO`s, NGO`s, Dream Nepal Travel & Tours Pvt.
