BTO Migration Watch Update ? April 2003

Migrants arrive en masse! As weather cleared over southern Europe earlier this week, migrants had the opportunity to make the jump to our shores. Who could have missed the mass arrival of Swifts and Swallows, bringing with them at least 10 Alpine Swifts and a possible record spring occurrence of 25 Red-rumped Swallows? Also arriving in large numbers were Black Terns and Little Gulls. First seen in Kent from the 8 April, Black Terns had reached East Yorkshire by the 15th and Merseyside two days later. The best count submitted was of eight in Cambridgeshire. Little Gull numbers away from traditional sites included up to 66 in London, 64 in Suffolk, 163 in Brighton and 43 in Cambridgeshire, all in the period 16th-26th April. Not yet using Migration Watch? Check out the site at http://www.bto.org and register.
