Volunteers Needed for Symonds Yat Rock

Help the RSPB to show Peregrines off to the public?

The RSPB has been running the peregrine viewing project on Symonds Yat Rock, Gloucestershire for 20 years ? they call it Aren`t Birds Brilliant Peregrine Viewing Project.Their aim is to show the public a nesting pair of Peregrines and their young in their natural setting in the stunning Wye Valley. To do this they use 3 high powered, top of the range telescopes (Swarovski ATS 80HD with 20-60x eyepiece, Nikon ED with 20-60x eyepiece and Leica 62mm Apo with 26x eyepiece) and this year they also have a Nikon field image system to show kids, wheelchair users and anyone who finds telescopes a problem to use, great views of the peregrines on a small screen.Their aim is to show the public a nesting pair of Peregrines and their young in their natural setting in the stunning Wye Valley. There are also school events and some family fun days. Over the season (from April to September) they expect to see around 50,000 visitors and the volunteers enable the RS PB to make the project the huge success it has become. The viewpoint is a great place to see loads of birds and other wildlife including occasional sightings of Red Kite, Honey Buzzard, Goshawk and Osprey and more regularly Sparrowhawk, Hobby, Ravens and Swifts.Anyone aged 18 or over who would like to help us can contact Susan Taylor or Neil Groves - Information Wardens, Symonds Yat Rock at RSPB, The Puffins, Parkend, Lydney, Gloucestershire GL15 4JA Tel: (01594) 562852 susan.taylor@rspb.org.uk Training can be provided and the RSPB do pay expenses (e.g. travel costs within the UK) and they also have a caravan that they can offer as accommodation for those who wish to help for a week or more at a time.
