2003 International Bird Photography Competition OpensLjubljana, Slovenia, 23 May 2003 -- Entries are invited for the 7th International Annual Bird Photography Competition organised by the Birdwatching and Bird Study Association of Slovenia (BirdLife in Slovenia) and Mobitel, Slovenia`s national mobile telephone service provider, which is also sponsoring the competition. 2003 year is International Year of Freshwater so DOPPS has chosen to highlight waterfowl as the theme of the annual Free as a Bird competition. Awards will be made for the most striking images of birds in their natural habitat. Amateur and professional photographers are welcome to enter.The master prize for each of two categories of the competition is approximately 1100 Euros, with a second prize of a digital GSM mobile phone, donated by Mobitel. The closing date for entries is 3rd September 2003. Judging will take place by an international panel in October and the awards will be made at a special ceremony and opening of the competition exhibition in Slovenia in November. Who can participate?
Both amateurs and professional photographers are invited to enter the competition. Works must be submitted before the deadline according to the guidelines specified below. Previously published material may be submitted; however, please include the information on when and where the photo appeared. Category A is open to photographers with a permanent or temporary residence in Slovenia, while category B is open to photographers from Slovenia and other countries.There are no restrictions concerning the time when an entry was taken (i.e. the entry need not have been produced during the year of this contest). Each photographer may submit a maximum of 10 photographs for each category.The Theme
Categories of the competition are:
Category A: Images from the life of the birds of Slovenian wetlands
Category B: WaterfowlImages of birds whose lives are dependent on sweet water habitats world wide (rivers, streams and lakes, sweet water and brackish wetlands, wet and marsh meadows, marshes?).Format of entries
Each entry must be submitted on a slide that can be reproduced. Originals of slides are not required. Copies are acceptable.Labelling and sending instructions for entries
This contest is anonymous. The selection panel will only learn participants` identities once judging has been completed. In order to ensure anonymity, entrants are requested to follow these guidelines:
All slides must have the following information marked on the slide frame:
the category code (A or B)a sequential number the entrant`s code (a identification number or word chosen by the entrant).
The bottom left corner of the slide frame (as you would hold the slide and look at it) should be clearly marked with a red dot in order to facilitate correct positioning of the slide.
Please attach a separate, single sheet of paper listing all submitted photographs and specifying the title of the photograph, as well as the time and place where the photograph was taken. Please submit the list either in printed form, or use block capitals.
Finally, entrants are required to submit a sealed envelope with the entrant`s code written on the outside of the envelope, and personal information (the author`s name and surname, address, phone number, and the author`s signature to guarantee the copyright, and the information submitted) placed inside the envelope.
It is not obligatory for the jury to deal with the entries that will not be labelled properly.Digital photography will also be included in this year`s competition
Digital photographs will also be accepted on the condition that they are not modified on computers. The recommended size of digital photographs is 1600 X 1200 pixels while the smallest size is 800 X 600 pixels. The record must be in jpg or tif format. Photographs, which number is also limited to 10, must be on a CD. The CD must have the following information marked on them:
the category code (A or B) a sequential number and name of photograph, if the photographs on the CD are in numbers (i.e. from 1 ? 10) the entrant`s code (chosen by the entrant).
It is recommended to send colour prints of the photographs on the CD.
Entrants are requested to submit a sealed envelope with entrant`s code written on the outside of the envelope, and personal information (the author`s name and surname, address, phone number, and the author`s signature to guarantee the copyright, and the information submitted) placed inside the envelope.All entries must be mailed to:

All received materials will be handled with utmost care. The organiser is not responsible for any loss or damage incurred during transportation.

All entries will be reviewed and judged by an international selection panel made up of six members:
Milan Pajk ? professor on the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana Boris Balant ? Studio Luks Irena Tr?ar ? Mobitel d.d. ? Public Relations Office, Dr. Davorin Tome, DOPPS, National Institute of Biology, Dr. Fabio Perco, international member of the jury. Honorary member: Anton Majzelj, Managing Director of Mobitel d.d. and member of the management board of Telekom Slovenija.
Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, colour, action, drama and overall impact. Photographs that are transformed in any way will not be evaluated. Furthermore, the panel will not consider photographs that do not follow the guidelines. It is not obligatory for the panel to give awards if the quality of the photographs would not meet the requested quality.
When taking photographs of birds be considerate and do not disturb birds or other animals.
The panel`s evaluations are final and non-reversible.Exhibition and awards:
Authors agree to the terms that the selection of the photographs will be shown at the annual competition exhibition without indemnity. This year the opening of exhibition will take place in October or November (the exact time and date will be announced on www.pinkponk.com and www.mobitel.si ) in Piran. The results and awards of the competition will be given at the opening of the exhibition where the awarded photographs will be exhibited. Award winners and the authors of selected photographs will be immediately notified by mail.
All the authors of the selected photographs and award winners will receive an invitation to the opening of the exhibition.Author`s rights:
Authors have complete copyright over their works. Award winners and authors of selected photographs agree to let the organiser of the competition use the photographs for promotional and commercial purposes. Mobitel will pay a fee of 30.000,00 SIT (130 EURO) for this right. The authors unconditionally agree to carry the copyrights to Mobitel d.d. with whom the authors bind themselves to make a contract about copyrights in 15 days after the opening of the exhibition.Awards:
