Birds of Venezuela

Birds of Venezuela DVD-ROM by Peter Boesman from BirdSounds.nl available direct see: http://www.birdsounds.nl

This is a DVD-ROM of the birds of Venezuela and includes 4400 sound recordings of over 1100 species [an impressive 33 hours of recorded song!], 1700 pictures of 775 species, 1380 distribution maps of ALL Venezuelan species as well as some nice pictures of the top birding localities. All of these are in an extremely user-friendly set up and I found it very east indeed to use.

Firstly, this is bought to you by a sound specialist and I was very impressed with all the recordings I listened to. The calls are long enough, clear and so far as I am able to judge not distorted in any way.

Secondly, the distribution maps are detailed being large enough and don’t stop at the country’s borders but show where the birds are known to occur in the whole of NW South America.

Lastly there are a great many very good photographs and a great many not so good ones. I am sure that they are all useful but they are extremely variable in quality and reflect, often, the difficulty of getting close up and well lit pictures of birds which may inhabit the canopy or skulk on the forest floor.

Whilst I was very impressed with the calls I was much less impressed with the photographs which come from a large number of different photographers.

Never-the-less, I would definitely want to spend many hours with this DVD-ROM were I embarking on a trip to Venezuela and, in deed, anywhere in that part of the world.
