September 2019 – A recent study by the British Trust for Ornithology (the BTO) found that there are now more birds in UK gardens than there were 40 years ago.

People are now being encouraged to see this for themselves in their own back garden as the BTO has teamed up with leading bird care manufacturer, Gardman, to launch the Wild Bird Banquet which is taking place throughout October.

It is easy to take part. To “host a banquet”, simply put an extra bird feeder out in the garden, sit back and watch the birds arrive then report the difference in the quantity of birds appearing via the Wild Banquet website.

The UK wide survey aims to have the nation falling in love with wild birds with just one feeder being able to make a noticeable difference to the quantity and variety of wild birds attracted to the garden.

Rachael Dickinson, senior marketing manager at Gardman, commented: “This is the largest survey of gardens and wild birds to be conducted. We’re calling on the public to host a banquet and get involved. The results will give valuable insight into wild bird habits, and how this changes regionally too, as well as helping the BTO with understanding and knowledge for its future work. Having just one more feeder in the garden can have a huge impact – making the garden a chirpier place to enjoy, whilst also providing food for birds.”

The website will have reporting of the results, as well as downloadable education packs. There will be chances to win and promotions in participating garden centres. To support the campaign there will be a series of activities taking place in garden centres, as well as the chance to win a free holiday and a host of other birdcare goodies.
