Psittaculidae – Old World Parrots
The Psittaculiudae (Old World Parrots) family is one of four superfamilies in the order Psittaciformes; the other three families are Strigopidae (New Zealand Parrots), Cacatuoidea (Cockatoos) & Psittacidae (African & New World Parrots).
Old World Parrots is actually a misnomer, as not all its members occur in the Old World and some Psittacinae also occurs in the Old World. The family consists of six subfamilies: Psittrichasinae, Agapornithinae, Loriinae, Platycercinae, Psittacellinae and Psittaculinae.
The Loriinae (Lorikeets and Lories), have often been placed in their own family (e.g., Clements 1991). They are known for their brush-tipped, nectar-feeding tongues. The Rainbow Lorikeet, for example, feeds on flowers with that adaptation. There are 53 species in a dozen genera, all confined to Australasia, eastern Indonesia, or remote South Pacific islands. Some are abundant and widespread, like the Rainbow Lorikeet, but many others are scarce and local.

The Platycercinae includes many of the famous Australasian parrots, including Budgerigar Melopsittacus undulatus. These are around 37 species in 14 genera, and many are found in Australia’s eucalyptus forest or the dry interior. Among these is the local Superb Parrot and Port Lincoln Parrot of western Australia.

The African component of this family (ignoring the psittaculid parrots in the north) are nine species of Agapornis lovebirds including one on Madagascar. Yellow-collared Lovebird is one of two lovebirds that are nearly endemic to Tanzania. The other is Fischer’s Lovebird (some isolated populations are recorded in Kenya). Lovebird sare small and often colourful species, frequently kept as pets. Gray-headed Lovebirdis endemic to Madagascar.

Characteristic features of all parrots include a strong, curved bill, an upright stance, strong legs, and clawed zygodactyl feet. Many parrots are vividly coloured, and some are multi-coloured. Most parrots exhibit little or no sexual dimorphism in the visual spectrum. They form the most variably sized bird order in terms of length. The most important components of most parrots’ diets are seeds, nuts, fruit, buds, and other plant material. A few species sometimes eat animals and carrion, while the lories and lorikeets are specialised for feeding on floral nectar and soft fruits. Almost all parrots nest in tree hollows (or nest boxes in captivity), and lay white eggs from which hatch altricial (helpless) young.

Parrots, along with ravens, crows, jays, and magpies, are among the most intelligent birds, and the ability of some species to imitate human voices enhances their popularity as pets. Some parrots are intelligent and talk at the level of a four-to-five-year-old human. Trapping wild parrots for the pet trade, as well as hunting, habitat loss, and competition from invasive species, has diminished wild populations, with parrots being subjected to more exploitation than any other group of birds. Measures taken to conserve the habitats of some high-profile charismatic species have also protected many of the less charismatic species living in the same ecosystems.
