Birding Apps have only been around a few short years but they are rapidly replacing printed field-guides and it’s obvious why. Not only can you carry a whole library that weighs no more than your smartphone or other device, but printed guides cannot not play videos nor sound recordings. For the first time since the very first field-guide was written and drawn, you can compare the birds call you are watching with a recording and carefully compare all the visual ID features.

Like books before them, apps are as varied in quality and coverage. Many are adequate, and a few are exemplary. Only the latter are listed below, mostly in the form of reviews. Against each are details to purchase them direct.
