A Photographic Guide to the Birds of the Cayman Islands By Patricia E Bradley Illustrated by Yves-Jacques Rey-Millet | 288 pages | colour photos | 4 b/w illustrations | 8 colour maps | Christopher Helm | Hardback | Feb 2013 | ISBN: 9781408193990The Publisher’s View: With a rich avifauna of more than 300 species, the three islands that make up the Cayman Islands – Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac – form an increasingly popular birding destination. Although the islands’ sole endemic species, Cayman Islands Thrush, was extinct by the 1940s, the islands have a healthy crop of regional scarcities and are an important migrant stopping point as they cross the Caribbean.

Containing hundreds of stunning photographs by Yves-Jacques Rey-Millet, A Photographic Guide to the Birds of the Cayman Islands, the latest addition to Helm’s Photographic Guides series, provides full photographic coverage of every species on the Cayman Islands list. Concise text for each species includes identification, similar species, voice, habitats and behaviour, status and distribution. A Photographic Guide to the Birds of the Cayman Islands is an essential companion for anyone visiting these beautiful islands. The Authors: Patricia Bradley is an ornithologist who has lived and worked on the Cayman Islands for more than forty years. Yves-Jacques Rey-Millet is a photographer who specialises in the birds of the Caribbean. His superb photography has appeared in many books, including A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Jamaica, which he co-authored.

Fatbirder View:The latest addition to Helm’s Photographic Guides series is a step up I think. Each species is covered with a series of photographs allowing for identification on all the main points. Most they shots are good and the light conditions are pretty consistent, presumably because the islands have climate rather than weather! I’m no lover of photo field guides, but of its sort this is of a high standard.
