Mediterranean Region
The Mediterranean Region is one of seven regions of Türkiye and covers an area of 122,927 km2 (47,462 square miles) with a population of around 10.6 million people. It is bordered by the Aegean region to the west, the Central Anatolia region to the north, the Eastern Anatolia region to the northeast, the Southeastern Anatolia region to the east, Syria to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Its largest city is Antalya. Other large cities are Adana, Mersin, Isparta, Hatay and Kahramanmaras.
It is one of the country’s most diverse natural areas, combining long coastal plains, the dramatic Taurus Mountains, fertile river deltas, and a warm Mediterranean climate.
The region is mountainous with the Toros Mountains, a mountain chain from west to east, covering most of the region. Another chain is the Amonos Mountains, which run north to south in the extreme east of the region. Mountains run parallel to the sea and in most places, they meet the sea except in the coastal plains.

These coastal plains were formed in the lower courses of rivers, the most important of which is Çukurova in the eastern part of the region; it was formed by three rivers, the Berdan, Seyhan and Ceyhan. The main lakes of the area are Lake Beyşehir, Lake Eğirdir and Lake Burdur, which form a closed basin in the northwest of the region.

The region has a Mediterranean climate at the coast with hot dry summers and mild to cool wet winters and a semi-arid continental climate in the interior with hot dry summers and cold snowy winters. Thanks to its strong contrast between coastal ecosystems and high mountain landscapes, the Mediterranean Region supports one of the richest biodiversity zones in Türkiye
Birding the Mediterranean Region
The Mediterranean Region includes coastal lagoons, river deltas, wetlands, pine forests, canyons, and high-altitude habitats in the Taurus Mountains. This wide variety of ecosystems creates excellent conditions for both migratory and resident bird species. Moreover, it lies along the major Afro-Eurasian migration flyway, making it a key corridor for soaring birds of prey, especially during spring and autumn migration. Wetlands along the coast are crucial for flamingos, herons, ibis, and waterfowl, while the Taurus Mountains provide breeding grounds for forest and alpine species.
Notable birds of the Mediterranean Region include such raptorsn as Short-toed Snake Eagle, Lesser Kestrel and Golden Eagle; wetland birds like Flamingo, herons, ibises, terns and waders; forest birds such as woodpeckers, warblers, finches, and tits. Migratory species that catch the eye are storks, bee-eaters, and raptors during migration peaks.

The best times for birdwatching are March to May for spring migration and nesting season and August to October for the autumn migration and peak raptor movement. Winter is also an excellent for waterbirds in coastal wetlands. Early mornings and clear, windy migration days are especially productive for raptor observation.

From the Göksu Delta’s wetlands to the peaks of the Taurus Mountains, the region provides outstanding birdwatching opportunities year-round. For birdwatchers interested in migration, raptors, and wetland species, the Mediterranean Region remains one of the most rewarding destinations in the Western Palearctic.
