The book of the film:

This DVD has been produced in conjunction with a book of the same title so it’s easy to find out all you need about every site in the film. The DVD is ideal for showing you each place and its birds and the book is perfect for giving you lots more information, including detailed maps, in a portable format – together they make the complete guide.Fatbirder View: Usually, when I look at Dave’s latest DVD I either re-live a past trip or my appetite is whetted for a birding trip to the country the DVD was filmed in. In this case I felt both – I loved being reminded of many of the locations I visited over a decade ago and the birds I saw. Moreover, my appetite was whetted by the many localities I did NOT visit and the birds I never saw.

My trip was self guided with nothing more to go by than a few old trip reports and so I took a package at the Sennagambia Hotel and then did my own thing, joined up for a few excursions and then hired a taxi and went looking for birds. This worked pretty well and, as I recall, I saw 199 species in 10 days… had I had the advantage of Daveid’s DVD and handy booklet I am sure I could have added to that. If I ever get the chance to go back I would surely take a trip up-river and also hire a guide, if nothing else to see a number of owls having seen none on my trip.

I always enjoy these DVDs and this was no exception, great filming, terrific birds and David’s thoughtful and gentle commentary. Another ‘must buy’ for anyone considering the Gambia for a birding trip and, if you have never been there you really, really should!
