Birds & Tattoos
Birds are a very, popular motif in tattoos; even more so, of course, if you are a birder. In the other links below, you will find a number of websites which either display bird tattoos or are stories about the wherefore and why of getting tattooed. Body art is something which is definitely on the increase, certainly in the UK, and birders, again, are no exception to that.
Maybe the major difference for birders is they want accuracy in the birds they have tattooed on them rather than artistry, although many are, indeed, works of art. Whereas non-birders may choose a bird tattoo as some sort of symbol, birders tend to pick their favourite bird or a bird that has been significant in their own life in some way. There are a number of birders who have been tattooed as part of a fundraising effort, and some, such as the ‘Inked Naturalist’, have thirty or more birds tattooed somewhere on their body. In his case, it was raising money to save an area that should have been under conservation in Turkey.
My own rather pathetic effort is in its sixth decade and although it’s a favourite bird, I cannot pretend it was linked to some conservation or fund-raising effort. Mine owes more to an early encounter with vodka than it does to my love of all things ornithological.

Every Tattoo Tells A Story - R Bruce Gonzo Birder
BLOG PageTattoos are an integral part of my Gonzo birding experience. Full stop. I got my first bird ink in August 2018. It was for Amytornis barbatus, Black Grasswren (I actually know how to spell that without looking). It was my 700th bird in Australia. My Aussie list is now at 784. I do hope to reach 800 before I am done, but those last sixteen won’t be easy. -
Four birds – that hurts
BLOG PageI am impressed by Tristan Reid’s quest, which Tristan told you about in his guest blog post 10 best birds of Turkey. He is getting his right arm and shoulder tattoed with these birds and is raising money for conservation in Turkey. Since that blogpost he has now started the painful process of adding one bird after the other to his arms. -
Judging A Birding Tattoo Contest
BLOG PageMy new book was a prize in a tattoo contest at a bird festival...said no person ever until Biggest Week in Birding 2013. Above is Paul Riss from Punk Rock Big Year and Rue Mapp from Outdoor Afro who were among the five judges. When Kim Kaufman asked if I would be part of the tattoo contest, I wasn't sure if she meant as a participant since I have a couple of tattoos, but she meant as a judge.
