Furnariidae – Ovenbirds, Woodcreepers & Allies
Furnariidae (Ovenbirds or Furnariids) is a large family of small suboscine passerines found in Mexico, and Central and South America. (Not to be confused with the Ovenbird Seiurus aurocapilla, which breeds in North America, that is not actually a furnariid but a wood warbler in the family, Parulidae.) This is a large family containing around 319 species and 71 genera.
After both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequencing it is now agreed that there are 319 Ovenbirds that make up the family Furnariidae, this includes the 54 species of Woodcreeper from the former family Dendrocolaptidae, which are confined to the Neotropical zone of Central and South America. (While confirming the overall phylogenetic pattern, other scientists instead opted for maintaining the woodcreepers as a separate family, while splitting the ovenbirds (as traditionally defined) into two families, Furnariidae and Scleruridae.)

The ovenbirds are a diverse group of insectivores which get their name from the elaborate, vaguely oven-like clay nests built by the horneros, although most other ovenbirds build stick nests or nest in tunnels or clefts in rock. The Spanish word for oven – horno, gives the horneros their name.

Firewood-gatherer Anumbius annumbi
Furnariid nests are always constructed with a cover, and up to six pale blue, greenish or white eggs are laid. The eggs hatch after 15 to 22 days, and the young fledge after a further 13 to 20 days.

They are small to medium-sized birds, ranging from 9cm to 35cm in length. While individual species often are habitat specialists, species of this family can be found in virtually any Neotropical habitat, ranging from city parks inhabited by Rufous Horneros, to tropical Amazonian lowlands by many species of foliage-gleaners, to temperate barren Andean highlands inhabited by several species of miners. Two species, the Seaside Cinclodes and the Surf Cinclodes, are associated with rocky coasts.

Crested Hornero Furnarius cristatus
They are one of the three mega-diverse families of Neotropical passerines, Furnariidae contains morphologically diverse species that occupy nearly all habitats in this region. With tails and bills adapted to nearly every insectivorous foraging niche, they are denizens of coastal rocks and Andean fell fields, and all forested habitats in between.

Line-fronted Canastero Asthenes urubambensis

Striated Earthcreeper Geocerthia serrana
They run on the ground and along branches, climb tree trunks, and burrow in the ground. The remarkable morphological diversity of the furnariids is paralleled by the greatest diversity of nest types of any bird family and a broad dietary array.

Their plumage may be the one aspect that allows some generalisation, and an alliterative aid to their recognition may be that the common names of many include the terms rufous, rusty, ruddy, or russet (and many are fulvous or fuscous).
