Psittacidae – African & New World Parrots

The family Psittacidae is one of three families of true parrots, and consists of two subfamilies, the Old World or Afrotropical parrots of Psittacinae and the New World or Neotropical parrots of Arinae. Some of the most iconic birds in the world are represented here, such as the Blue-and-gold Macaw among the New-World parrots and the African Grey Parrot among the Old-World parrots. They are found in tropical and subtropical zones and inhabit Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean islands, sub-Saharan Africa and the island of Madagascar, and the Arabian Peninsula.

Most parrots pair for life, and form monogamous pair bonds. Courtship displays often include vocalizations and tail-fanning; and some, like the Red-fan Parrot Deroptyus accipitrinus of the Amazon Basin, have an erectile ruff that frames the head with bright red and blue bands.

Sun Parakeet Aratinga solstitialis

This family probably had its origin early in the Paleogene period after the western half of Gondwana had separated into the continents of Africa and South America, before the divergence of African and New World lineages c. 30 to 35 million years ago. It is estimated that the New World parrots, and by implication Old World parrots, last shared a common ancestor with the Cacatuidae (Australian parrots) c. 59 million years ago. The data place most of the diversification of psittaciforms around 40 million years ago, after the separation of Australia from West Antarctica and South America. Divergence of Psittacidae from the ancestral parrots resulted from a common radiation event from what was then West Antarctica into South America then Africa via late Cretaceous land bridges that survived through the Paleogene.

The New World and African parrots are most often green, and range in size from the hefty Ara macaws to the diminutive Forpus parrotlets. Most of us are familiar with parrots as cage-bird mimics, but in nature, parrots are highly mobile, social, and loud. Their wild vocalisations are generally non-melodic squawks, lacking the sophistication one might expect given their verbal prowess in captivity. Like other psittaciforms, they use their top-hinged bills not only as a versatile feeding implement, but also as a fifth limb in climbing among branches.

Red-and-green Macaw Ara chloropterus

Some parrots are among the most spectacular birds in the world, including the famed Hyacinth Macaw of the Pantanal region of south-central South America. It is the world’s largest parrot at 100 cm long and 1.7 kg in weight. Hyacinth Macaws feed on the fruits of a small number of palms, and is quite local in the wild.

Festive Amazon Amazona festiva

The New World has but a single tribe in a single subfamily (Arini), yet among the approximately 150 species is an astonishing variety in size, shape, and behaviour. About 30 species are in the widespread New World genus Amazona; these include some of the Neotropics commonest parrots, but also some of the world’s rarest species. They are often kept as pets; indeed, in past centuries explorers coming upon previously undiscovered native inhabitants often found they kept pet parrots in their villages. Such parrots can live 20-30 years – indeed, captive parrots have been some of the longest living birds in recorded history. The evening flights of parrots going to communal roosts can be an impressive spectacle.

Burrowing Parrot Cyanoliseus patagonus

Almost 70 of the New World parrots are called parakeets in more than a dozen genera. For example, the genus Pyrrhura contains a number of lovely species in South America, including the endangered El Oro Parakeet of southwest Ecuador and the colourful Maroon-bellied Parakeet of eastern Brazil and northern Argentina.

Brown-headed Parrot Poicephalus cryptoxanthus

An impressive spectacle among some South American parrots is at the unique and local natural salt licks (salidas) that attract parrots early and late in the day to eroded cliff-faces along some South American rivers. One, along the Napo River, Ecuador  has the large, very pale-headed & pale-backed Mealy Parrots with yellow tails; the small dark-green Blue-headed Parrots with their all-blue heads; the mid-sized medium-green Yellow-crowned Parrots and Orange-winged Parrots. This mix of species using the same salt lick is typical. It may be the clay ingested helps with digestion, or it could protect against the toxin in some seeds taken as food.

Blue-headed Parrot Pionus mens

New World parrots are relatives of two modern genera in Africa. One genus is Psittacus, which includes the African Grey Parrot and the other is Poicephalus. The latter are mid-sized, short-tailed, rather squat parrots that are widely distributed in Africa. Examples include Senegal Parrot of west Africa and Brown-headed Parrot of southeastern African. The famous African Gray Parrot is found in the Congo Basin and surrounding areas. It is considered the best talking parrot of them all. African Greys gather in communal roosts for the evening; up to 10,000 have been counted in a roost in Gabon.

Blue-crowned Parakeet Thectocercus acuticaudatus

In the Caribbean, four species of Amazon parrots are increasing through conservation efforts especially the four species in the Lesser Antilles – one each in St. Lucia and St. Vincent, and two on Dominica. The latter two are limited to the primeval forest on Diablotins Mountain, where the Red-necked Amazon occurs at lower elevations while the rarer Imperial Amazon Amazona imperialis is up higher in the cloud forest.
