Forums & Mailing Lists

Forums, Mailing Groups & On-line Communities

There are lots of birding related discussion groups around the world. Mailing groups are, sadly few being overtaken by interest group pages that, sadly, tend to fight shy of controversy. Forums are also much less used now and people tend to use twitter feeds instead, sharing their opinions more and more with those of a similar persuasion as people block those they disagree with etc.

Personally I  feel rather deprived of the opportunity to take part in debates – which, I believe is the best way to learn and rejoice in diversity.

These changes mean that the lists below are dwindling, but you will find many more on county, state and country pages that, while open to outsiders, are there for the benefit of birders in those localities.

Love ’em or hate ’em there is always something going on and they are a great way of contacting birders local to you. Its just a shame that there are not more world-wide fora, mailing groups or other ways to exchange views with birders everywhere.

Geographical area groups are listed on their individual country or state pages [or in the UK county pages] etc. and bird family pages carry groups relevant to particular species or bird families.

In order to become part of the group you have to subscribe; the way you do this may differ with different groups. The addresses are sometimes listed. So the websites below are ones which relate either to interest areas not confined by species or geography, or that are for areas which do not have an individual page – like three US states together, or several EEC countries together.

This information is being updated as often as possible but, needless to say, Fatbirder would like to know of any additions, please to let me know. Bear in mind that although the mailing groups below exist some are almost totally inactive and only a few are still well used.
